Facebook updated their policy for ads

Photo - Facebook.com

I don't know that to how many country Facebook is sending their updated policy about ads. But if you are living in Myanmar, you must get the updated policy, send by Facebook. You can also read at www.facebook.com/about/terms-updates/?ref=notif&notif_t=data_policy_notice.

If you cannot read there, let me share you here.

"Over the past year, we’ve introduced new features and controls to help you get more out of Facebook, and listened to people who have asked us to better explain how we get and use information.

Now, with Privacy Basics, you'll get tips and a how-to guide for taking charge of your experience on Facebook. We're also updating our terms, data policy and cookies policy to reflect new features we've been working on and to make them easy to understand. And we're introducing improvements to ads based on the apps and sites you use off Facebook (online behavioral advertising) and giving you control.
These updates take effect on January 1, 2015. As always, we welcome your feedback about our policies.

Privacy Basics
Privacy Basics offers interactive guides to answer the most commonly asked questions about how you can control your information on Facebook. For example, you can learn about untagging, unfriending, blocking and how to choose an audience for each of your posts. This information is available in 36 languages.
Along with our privacy checkup, reminder for people posting publicly and simplified audience selectors, Privacy Basics is the latest step we've taken to help you make sure you're sharing with the people you want.

Helping you get more out of Facebook
Every day, people use our apps and services to connect with the people, places and things they care about. The updates to our policies reflect the new products we've been working on to improve your Facebook experience. They also explain how our services work in a way that's easier to understand. Here are some highlights:

Discover what's going on around you: We’re updating our policies to explain how we get location information depending on the features you decide to use. Millions of people check into their favorite places and use optional features like Nearby Friends (currently only available in some regions). We're working on ways to show you the most relevant information based on where you are and what your friends are up to. For example, in the future, if you decide to share where you are, you might see menus from restaurants nearby or updates from friends in the area.

Make purchases more convenient: In some regions, we're testing a Buy button that helps people discover and purchase products without leaving Facebook. We're also working on new ways to make transactions even more convenient.
Find information about privacy on Facebook at the moment you need it: To make them more accessible, we moved tips and suggestions to Privacy Basics. Our data policy is shorter and clearer, making it easier to read.

Understand how we use the information we receive: For example, understanding battery and signal strength helps make sure our apps work well on your device. We ask for permission to use your phone's location when we offer optional features like check-ins or adding your location to posts.

Get to know how the family of Facebook companies and apps work together: Over the past few years, Facebook has grown and we want to make sure you know about our family of companies, apps and services. We use the information we collect to improve your experience. For example, if you're locked out of your Instagram account, you can use your Facebook information to recover your password. Nothing in our updates changes the commitments that Instagram, WhatsApp and other companies have made to protect your information and your privacy.

Your information and advertising: People sometimes ask how their information is shared with advertisers. Nothing is changing with these updates—we help advertisers reach people with relevant ads without telling them who you are. Learn more about ads and how you can control the ads you see.

Giving you more control over ads
We've heard from some of you that it can be difficult to control the types of ads you see if you use multiple devices and browsers. In the past, if you opted out of certain kinds of advertising on your laptop, that choice may not have been applied for ads on your phone. We know that many people use more than one phone, tablet or browser to access Facebook, so it should be easy for you to make a single choice that applies across all of your devices.

That's why Facebook respects the choices you make about the ads you see, across every device. You can opt out of seeing ads on Facebook based on the apps and sites you use through the Digital Advertising Alliance. You can also opt out using controls on iOS and Android. When you tell us you don't want to see these types of ads, your decision automatically applies to every device you use to access Facebook. Also, we're now making ad preferences available in additional countries, beginning with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland and the UK.

We hope these updates improve your experience. Protecting people's information and providing meaningful privacy controls are at the core of everything we do, and we believe these announcements are an important step."

Facebook have to update the policy because there are many people, complaining about ads they are seeing. But in Myanmar, only few Facebook users know how to report and manage ads they are seeing. Facebook is also introducing 'buy' feature to shop on Facebook without going to any page. Let's see if those kind of features are coming to Myanmar.

How successful entrepreneurs work

In Tech in Asia, I saw the article 'How to beat Rocket companies', which is really interesting. There are many thing they said. But there is only one thing I want to mention for Myanmar entrepreneurs.

I also worked for Rocket Internet in Myanmar. I was a marketing executive in 2012 and became Head of SEO at early 2014. What I came to know and see that they are really working too hard. I usually work since at Rocket till 9 or 10 pm. But I was amazed that they often worked later than me. They make Skype calls for global meetings, etc. Those who work late are foreigners who are dutch and German people.

In Tech in Asia's article, they also mentioned that Rocket guys are working late. Let's see Myanmar. As far as I can see, most Myanmar people don't usually work late. Everyone may have their personal things to do. And those who work late also have their own purpose. For me, I usually work late to learn something else. As I believe that I was raised in life with very few resources to learn, I am used to staying at office late and learn everything what I want from online. Sometimes, I work if I didn't finish things to do at day time.

So what about you? Does work make you stressful? Does work give you pressure? For me, I am seeing that work is giving me opportunity. They are challenging me everyday. It's your challenge. I don't want to say you to work late because it just depends on you. If we check successful entrepreneurs, we can see that they usually work late. They work more than a normal people does. So what about you? I think that 8 hours time limit for working is very few. You should also have time for learning.

As Buddha said, you became what you taught and what you think. An entrepreneur or a normal worker?

Market Research about Myanmar is needed

One of my colleges from pas job suggested me to make a market research about Myanmar. He is working in Germany in online marketing field. Even people online need a market research to market a product online.

Do you what foreign business demands from local market? Foreign business usually demand local data. That's why my friend suggested me to make research on local market. The research should focus on the followings.

1) Which business is trending in Myanmar?
2) How may people use internet?
3) Which products from which brands are widely used in Myanmar?
4) Myanmar people culture
5) Which mobile applications are being used mostly?
6) How many TV Channel subscribers are in Myanmar?
7) How many mobile subscribers are in Myanmar?
8) How many mobile internet users are in Myanmar?
9) How much time people spend online in Myanmar?
10) Which businesses are being  started by local people?
11) Top 10 smartphones in Myanmar
12) Top 10 brands in Myanmar
14) Top 10 business in Myanmar
15) Top 10 millionaires in Myanmar
16) Top 10 actors and actress in Myanmar
17) Top 10 computer and laptop brands in Myanmar
18) Top 10 diseases in Myanmar (with detail information)
19) How many people usually use online for shopping?

and there are many, many things people who gonna found a business in Myanmar, would like to know. Think by the side of them and answer all question with correct information.

If you have all researched data about Myanmar, you can start an own business such as consultancy, researching, survey, etc. there are also some companies already in Myanmar which already do it. But still they cannot provide detail information.

Some information are hard to get retrieved because it's hard to deal with government's database on local people. But still you can do researching by our own work force. Some cost you much, but some cost few. You may make business upon it by making two layers. First layer is where you put all information which you can show to public. You can use it to attract local companies to work with you. It must be a general information which don't show detail. The second layer is what you can use to sell to business. You can name is advanced researched data and raise the price as much as you can. But you shouldn't cheat customers. Start a researching business and win the local market.

You may already know or not know that I am writer/ editor at YoYarLay. YoYarLay is one of the most successful online media in Myanmar. Especially, YoYarLay is being known on Facebook. It's getting over 1 million Liks on Facebook now.

Facebook like is 1 million. Total people reach on posts is over 3.9 millions this week. I am not lying. It's true that we are having too much readers than Facebook likes. Still YoYarLay is top one community page in Myanmar. But YoYarLay is not community. It is news and media. As we got wrong in page setting, YoYarLay is generated by Facebook as a community page. Whatever, it is in top 5 Facebook pages list in Myanmar. Most people also came to know me from YoYarLay. My author name is Aung Kham (YoYarLay) in Myanmar language.

Even sometime when I introduce new people outside, they said "are you Aung Kham (YoYarLay)? So I know you". I am glad that people like what I share. The reason the page got success is we posted the following types.

1) Educational/ Knowledge posts
We educate people via Facebook. Myanmar people need educational posts and knowledge posts. They eager to know new things. So we translate and copywrite on our own way and publish it on page.

2) Inspirational/ Motivational posts

The other fact which make the page differ from a normal news and media page is that we inspire and motivate people by articles. Sometime we write about people who fought cancer. Sometime we write why we should have good will. And we write many more to inspire and motivate people.

3) We keep on other post

Other posts mean global news, sport news, etc. We still keep them up on the page so that people don't get bored by reading knowledge and educational posts always.

The key to success of a Facebook page is knowing what people want. If you know what people want, you will win.

On 28th of December we are having meet-up with readers. If you are willing to come, you need to fill in the form http://goo.gl/NAuM5q from which we will choose the best 100 applicants and send invitation. You are welcome.

Sleep less won't make you a smart entrepreneur

Smart people work hard and play hard. Entrepreneurs are also a kind of hard working people. Some people even get late at night. Getting late at day job is fine. But do you think it is a good habit working late at night? I've been working late since 2012. At those time, I was very skinny because I ate less and slept less.

Eating less is consequence of sleeping less. Then the another consequence is you cannot work effectively. You won't be able to generate creative idea. I drink energy drinks or medicine that could give us energy to stay fresh for a day. But it won't be good for you if you are using that for many days. Your will lost weight, your face will be look like a skeleton, and your body become a chock stick.

Sleeping late is always a problem in entrepreneurs' life. Some people said sleeping late could makes us a fatty. Actually, it make people with high calorie get more calorie and people with low calorie loss more calorie. It make thin person thinner and fat person fatter. I don't know detail about medic fact. But I believe it goes that way. I were never getting fat by sleeping late but get a chock stick body in the past.

When having things to do, you can take time to work until 10 or 11. As long as you are taking at least 7 hours to sleep a day, you can work as much as you can. If you didn't get 7 hours of sound sleep time, you can have a power nap afternoon.

My life style changed since one year ago that I sleep 7 hours a day. Even if I could not make it, I have a power nap at office. I don't know if your office would allow to do it. Sleep full and work hard. Then become a smart entrepreneur with creative ideas.

Digital Marketing Learners in Myanmar community founded

I founded a community on Facebook named Digital Marketing Learners. I have plan to make it bigger by adding more people who are from digital marketing field. I will try to make events and workshop monthly. Startups usually have big dream. To make the dream happen always start with a first step. My first step is creating a Facebook group.

In Myanmar, to found a community about digital things, creating a Facebook group is the best way to start. Myanmar people are wasting too much time today on Facebook. Then so digital marketers also have to spend the time on it and learn people's culture.

I've been sharing my knowledge for people offline for digital marketing since early 2014.I would like to make it to be more effective. To do something, only one's effort could not be strong enough. That's why I created the group and add more people. I am also still a learners. I will be a learner forever. We will learn together things about digital marketing. Weekly I am sharing to some people. I am sharing tools and resources in the group which may be very helpful for you if you are also like one of us.

You are invited if you would like to learn. I will make many offline event by cooperating with companies and other people.

Culture and religious fact impact your brand - Be careful

$

Some of my foreigner asked me how important culture and religious is for Myanmar people? Some asked what to avoid when making a marketing and advertising contents. The image shown is what a bar made for their marketing campaign. Now those people who made are in jail. Even a foreigner, a New Zealand citizen is in jail now. I don't know how many year they will have to live in prison. The pay back is big. There are may things that you have to be very careful when starting a business. Your marketing campaigns should be started after taking facts on

 1) Location

 2) Culture

3) Religion

 Location

Yangon would be the best place to start an online business. But you cannot sell clothes for cold weather because Yangon is never getting cold. But your fancy products would be in high demand.

Culture

Making an advertisement with girls in short skirts would be nice. But you better don't do it. People in Myanmar are going to like and adapt foreign culture. People over 30s wouldn't like it. They like women in traditional dress. You can still make ads with sexy girls. But you will only get young consumers. Old consumers won't try it. They love traditional contents.

Religion

Religion is the most important fact that you should never mess up with, especially with Buddhism. Honestly, even I don't like when people use lord Buddha's image in in-proper place. People in Myanmar are very sensitive about their belief. You need to respect all religions such as Buddhism, Muslim, Hindu, etc. Religion problem is still happening in Myanmar. Try to make sure your product intend for everyone else when your product really does. Otherwise focus on one group of people if your produce really does.

Google Translate support Myanmar language now!

$

Now you can translate from English to Myanmar, Myanmar to English and to and from many other languages by Google Translate. It is done by Google Translation for Burmese community. You can also become one of them.

Google Translate don't still have too much data. They need more Myanmar volunteers. Google Translate is needing improvement. There are still many mistakes. Some Myanmar people are making jokes on the mistakes. It is not a perfect one yet. And I think it will never become a perfect one. But they can make it useful for foreigners who want to learn about Myanmar. Google Translate will be able to give you 70 percent of the meaning of the content. It won't bring you a 100 percent one. But it's fine. Are you thinking to rely on Google Translate for creation and translation content? You still need someone else to fix it.

People usually say they are really feeling afraid for the day machine and robot replace people. I swear they will never replace human. They always need human. They will just become a supporter for human. There is a fact that you need to know, which is Google Translate only support for Myanmar Unicode Code. They don't support Zawgyi font. Zawgyi font is also a Myanmar language, but not a stand language which is not saved correctly in computer. So Google only support Myanmar Unicode. In Myanmar online network, many contents are in Zawgyi font. You won't be able to translate them. At least you need to convert that texts into Unicode and then translate it into English.

It is just in early sate. You won't be able to translate paragraphs of Burmese into English for now. But it won't be too long to wait. The day you want is around.

Facebook now can detect your drunk face

Facebook now has technology to detect if you are drunk in the photos you uploaded. Facebook already used their sensing technology in images since more than three years ago. Now the technology is upgraded to a high level which is detecting drunk faces.

Facebook also said that they want to become a digital assistance for users. I think their destination will not be too far away for them. Facebook make it to make sure that you don't upload images while you are drunk. So there is no way you will regret for the photos. Facebook installed face detecting technology to tag people we know. Now their new technology even know if you are drunk. Facial appearances of a person is not the same with others. It will be expensive and hard to develop a technology to detect and give the output if people in the picture is drunk or normal.

It ma be like an imagination if you are not in touch with technology field. But such kind of advantages are being used some CCTV cameras. Mostly people use it for investigation. US military and others are using it for their robots.

Facebook is also having other new products such as giving relevant news feeds to each user according to their behavior. It is also not a new one because Facebook already have been using it and make it an advantage for advertisers. But like face detection technology, they are having the better version of news feeds giving system for users. Whoever want to compete with Facebook? Be brave and think about better things that they won't do for now.

Linking: what web admin should not forget

The problem is Myanmar Web content creator/ writers don't take time for linking in text. For example, we don't usually put click-able link (active link) in any articles on websites. Linking is very important for Data searching. However Google is improving search technology for Myanmar Web content. Search will not give the best result unless web admin are not linking.

There are two type of linking.

1) Internal linking (Inbound linking)
2) External linking (Backlinking)

Web content updaters don't usually insert any inbound link or external link. Then the sites are not optimized well. As the site is not optimized well, people cannot get good information. Media website may be thinking that inserting link is a busy job. And they don't even want to insert link to texts when we asked. That's the problem I founded out when worked at Rocket internet Myanmar.

Then so Myanmar web content are very individual.and hard to find more resources. Beside that fact, they are not using Myanmar Unicode.

Online marketing always take care of linking. Linking can give benefit for SEO. It's good for both size. Not a one-sided benefit. It's win-win strategy. If you refers other website (helpful resources) in your articles, people may like it. What people like is what search engines like. Helpful resources might be in your website and in another website. If you link to other website, it is external linking. If you link to your article in the same website, it is internal linking.

There are lots of things to consider when linking. For example, there are two types of link, follow link and non-follow link. There are also some rules to follow when linking in article. You shouldn't put too much links in one articles. Do you wanna learn about it? I am going to make a workshop on it at SuleTech. But the time and detail is not confirmed yet. I will update you.

The year 2014 is ending. Here is the list of top ten Facebook pages in Myanmar according to the data based in socialbakers.com.

7Days News Journal, Eleven Media Group and The Irrawaddy (Burmese Version) Facebook pages are top three. They all are local printing media. Eleven Media claimed that they are top one printing media in Myanmar. 7Days News Journal, which is under parent company – Information Matrix, is a journal. Also they are publishing newspaper like Eleven Media does. They both are competing in local news market. The Irrawaddy was a foreign based online media organization. Starting from last three year, they have been publishing Journals in English and Myanmar language in Myanmar and other countries. They have strong experience online. So it isn’t hard for them to invade Myanmar online media market.

On the fourth, you may be seeing YoYarLay. YoYarLay is an online media, started by Tun New Technology. I leaded since 2012 and today it became top 4 Facebook page in Myanmar. It is top one community page in Myanmar. The fact that makes YoYarLay differ from other media is content. The content articles, news shared by YoYarLay are educational, motivation and inspirational.

On the fifth, Aung San Su Kyi, a Burmese opposition politician and chairperson of the National League for Democracy in Burma, is standing in the list. As far as I know, she is not using social media. She may be aware of future growth of social media. Today the page may be managing by people who support and work for her and NLD. The page is getting lots of local and international fans.

Sai Sai Kham Leng, one of the most famous male singer in Myanmar, is sixth most famouse Facebook page in Myanmar. He is top one celebrity in Myanmar, having lots of follower in his personal account and on Facebook page. He is managing his page and some people may be consulting him. VOA Burmese Fan Page, a radio station based in American, targeting Myanmar nationals, is at 8.

Map-maker is where you can contribute inserting local data in Google Map. You can add data in the categories such as Restaurant, Cafe, Condo, University, Shopping Mall, Gym, Movie Theater, Bank, Hospital, Bank Station, etc.

When Google Map have enough data, it will be a great support for businesses and individuals. You may missed the chance to contribute Google Translate. But you can still improve it. Now you get chance to early help it. Make sure you don't put wrong data. Otherwise people will get wrong information and data. Search result in Google Search Engine will be very accurate for business and public places if we have data in Map. Google also have advertising service based on Google Map. It is having functions such as a route planner for traveling by foot, car, bicycle (beta test), or with public transportation

Google Map is a free service for any one else. Google self-driving car used Google Map. We cannot say it is impossible to happen in Myanmar. There is also a service from Google which is called Google for Business. If you business is put on the map. You have benefits.

Only those who have local knowledge and data can develop it. Now it is call of duty to improve map in Myanmar.

A good web startup to learn - Iteracy

I don't usually appreciate people and business easily and without learning about them. Since three days ago, I found out a website iteracy.com. Check and learn about them. I believe you may like it.

Iteracy is a web design and development service company, a startup, based in UK. I searched in Google for some online marketing and SEO tips. I found out that their website is appearing in top organic search result of search engine page. It means that they are really professional at it. I founded that they are giving services such as web design, web development, content management, web hosting, SEO and some other online things for businesses.

Another fact I like about them is their helpful resources. They know that people won't usually believe a service just by checking services, protofoli and contact us tab. They give resources for free to everyone and they show their achievements for business. Other websites they did are also really awesome. Local web service businesses should take the lesson from Iteracy. I'm seeing so-called web service and development companies in Myanmar. Creating a website within a week and give them a bad quality website. As those web companies also said that with that price they deserve, I have no comments at all for that actually and finally. If I do that business, I will make the best and will ask for fair price.

Web development, design and other online jobs such as SEO, content management are not just a job. It is art, making things beautiful online for businesses. If you can give people the best of you, they will give you what you want.

Myanmar usually don't have long holiday for Christmas. But some companies does it for their employee. Some people usually take leave by their decision. During that days, most people usually feel it like a period of relax even though they have to work. In many foreign companies in Myanmar, foreigners usually get holidays. Employees who work under management of foreigners usually don't have lots of tasks for that period. So this is the time to take little relax. What will you do? I usually watch movies.

Here is the list of movies you can watch in Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyitaw and some other cities in Myanmar, where cinemas are existing.

1) Rise of the legend
2) Hobbit 3
3) Penguins of Madagascar
4) Ghost Overtime
5) interstellar
6) Jessabelle
7) Exodus: Gods and Kings

Most of them are what I already watched. I will try for Hobbit-3. I recommend you to watch Rise of the legend. It may motivate you. For fun, watch Penguins. To learn the history of Greek, Exdous is the best movie to watch. If you like horror movie, Ghost Overtime and Jessabelle are on. To watch sci-fi movie, interstellar is on Taw Win Center and some other cinemas.

I wish you merry Christmas!
